Here are the contenders:

Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee

631 Wilshire Blvd.
Santa Monca, CA 90401

Sidecar’s flagship store in Orange County has been bringing lines of patrons from all over Southern California to their doors since 2012, and they’ve finally opened a new location in Santa Monica. While they pride themselves on their delicious Stumptown Roasters coffee, nothing pairs better than the artisanal, delectable doughnuts they’re churning out from scratch. LA natives, no more traveling to OC to line up for this ultimate donut-porn experience.

Sweet Retreat

924 Coast Highway
Long Beach, CA 90806

Residing in Long Beach, within a myriad of donut shops on every corner, Sweet Retreat outshines the rest of them. Cereal-topped donuts and ice cream sandwiches are just a few of the treats they dole out. They also have a roasted s’mores donut straight out of heaven. Order a dozen ahead and you’ll get the best variety.

Kettle Glazed Doughnuts

6211 Franklin Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90028

Behold, the rightful owner of the Croughnut. Here, you’ll find melt-in-your-mouth cronuts unlike any other, along with cruffins, and donuts (vegan and GF options included). A must-have if you’re looking for a good cronut.

DK’s Donuts

1614 Santa Monica Blvd.
Santa Monca, CA 90401

This mom-and-pop shop literally has everything. They’re known best in LA for their waffle-donut hybrid, but they’ve also got cronuts, protein donuts, vegan donuts, Ube (purple yam) donuts, and savory concoctions that will make you do a triple-take. Oh, and you can stuff any donut with ice cream. If you get that late-night donut craving, they’re open 24 hours. Like we said, they do everything.

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse

Larchmont: 111 S. Ave. 59
Los Angeles, CA 90004

Highland Park: 248 N. Larchmont Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90042

This bakery has two LA shops, along with other locations in Orange County, San Francisco and Seoul. More than their playful, modern twist and decor, you’ll swoon over their menu of donuts and “cruffins” (croissant-muffins) stuffed with crafty, infused fillings. We know we did.

(fōnuts)

8104 W. 3rd St.
Los Angeles, CA 90048

These ladies have gone against the donut norm and specialize in steaming and baking (not frying) donuts. They also offer vegan and gluten-free donuts that use almond flour (not a nut-free environment — sorry kids.) They stick to all-natural ingredients without sacrificing the true donut flavor, so you can satisfy your sweet tooth with less guilt.

SK Donuts

5850 W. 3rd St.
Los Angeles, CA 90036

This family-owned shop does cronuts, or shall we say “SKronuts”, in the best way. From strawberry & Nutella to apple pie stuffed SKronuts, to Oreo & creme stuffed donut bars, we wouldn’t recommend skipping out on this gem of a shop. Bring your stretchy pants.

Donut Friend

5107 York Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90042

This shop is owned by Mark Trombino, former drummer and music producer who left music and fulfulled his lifelong dream of opening a donut shop. This resulted in all kinds of punny, music-themed donut names, but best of all, flavors you’ve never dreamed of. Sprinkled among their classic flavors are creations like the “Jets to Basil” and “Srirachosin”. Yes, Sriracha and donuts.

Blue Star Donuts

1142 Abbot Kinney Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90291

451 Manhattan Beach Blvd.
Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

Blue Star originated in Portland, and after catapulting to success, opened shop in Los Angeles. A new shop has opened up in Manhattan Beach, as well. This shop is known for it’s out-of-the-box flavors, like the blueberry bourbon basil donut, apple cider fritter. and did we mention Cointreau creme brulee?

Donut Snob

All over Los Angeles

For self-proclaimed snobs, these donut afficionados are pouring a lot of love into their treats. These donuts are delivery-only, so you can’t stop by for a one-and-done. They deliver all over LA, packing a punch of flavors in their made-to-order, seasonal creations. Tip: their fresh fruit donuts are to die for.
